FAA flight reductions are here — make smart moves by taking advantage of alternate airports in the World Fuel FBO Network

With the FAA implementing phased flight reductions at 40 major U.S. airports, rerouting to alternate airports is more than a backup plan — it’s a strategic move. Whether you're a flight department, charter operator, or corporate aviation team, here are five key considerations to ensure a smooth transition to relief airports in the World Fuel FBO Network.

1. Know Your Alternate Options

Before you file your next flight plan, review nearby relief airports that offer comparable access and services. Many locations within our World Fuel FBO Network are located within 30–60 minutes of major hubs and offer exceptional service, shorter taxi times, and less congestion.

Tip:  Use our FBO Locator Tool  to search for alternate airports you know are near impacted hubs like JFK, LAX, ORD, and ATL.

2. Check FBO Capabilities

Not all alternates are created equal. Look for FBOs that offer:
•    Full-service ground handling
•    Hangar space and ramp availability
•    Crew amenities (lounges, catering, Wi-Fi)
•    Customs and immigration support (where applicable)

Tip: Air Elite® by World Fuel locations meet strict service standards and offer consistent experience across the network. Visit our website↗ to search the network or for more information:

3. Coordinate with Trip Support early

Rerouting can affect everything from fuel arrangements to ground transportation. Our Trip Support team can help you:
•    Refile flight plans
•    Arrange crew and passenger logistics
•    Secure fuel pricing and volume discounts
•    Navigate local regulations and slot restrictions

Tip: Contact Trip Support as soon as rerouting is considered — especially for international or time-sensitive missions.

4. Communicate with Your Crew and Passengers

Changes in airport location can impact pickup times, hotel bookings, and ground transfers. Keep your crew and passengers informed with updated itineraries and clear instructions.

Tip: Include maps, drive times, and FBO contact info in your dispatch notes or passenger briefings.

5. Take Advantage of Loyalty and Incentives

Flying to alternate airports doesn’t mean sacrificing value. Many FBOs in our network offer:

  • World Fuel Rewards points
  • Contract fuel pricing
  • Seasonal promotions or waived fees

Tip: Be sure to take advantage of the bonus World Fuel rewards offered by Air Elite member locations.
